Chromebook keys not functioning as they should
💻 Chromebook Keyboard Settings: Default Configuration
This article outlines the default keyboard settings for a Chromebook, which students commonly change. If you're experiencing unexpected key behavior, follow the steps below to restore the correct mappings and typing speed.
⚙️ How to Check Keyboard Settings
- Click the Time/Status area in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
- Click the Settings gear icon (⟳).
- In the Settings window, select Device from the left-hand menu.
- Select Keyboard.
This screen is where the mappings for common keys and the key repeat rate can be adjusted.
🔑 Default Key Mappings
Students often change the function of the Search (🔎), Ctrl, and Alt keys. The default settings should be configured as follows:
| Key | Default Setting | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Search (🔎) | Search | Opens the app launcher and search bar. |
| Ctrl | Ctrl | Used for common shortcuts (e.g., Ctrl+C for copy). |
| Alt | Alt | Used for other shortcuts (e.g., Alt+Tab to switch windows). |
| Backspace | Backspace | Deletes the character before the cursor. |
| Caps Lock | Disabled | Caps Lock is turned on by pressing Alt + Search. |
Note: The Shift key is not remappable on this screen and should always function as Shift. If it is not working, try a hard reset of the Chromebook hardware.
⏱️ Default Key Repeat Settings
These settings control how quickly a character repeats when a key is held down. If a key repeats too fast (or not at all), these settings are likely changed.
- Press and hold to automatically repeat the key: On (Toggle switch enabled)
- Delay before repeat: Medium (The default is usually centered on the slider)
- Repeat rate: Medium (The default is usually centered on the slider)
